When nickel-plated, the plates are easier to ink and clean (the glossy surface allows you to take away the ink with great ease), and hold a much higher number of prints, in the case of etching up to a thousand. Nickel plating avoids the possible alterations of the color in contact with the metal, especially as regards the white, color that in contact with the metal tends to oxidize and become gray. The matrices will also be better preserved, avoiding unpleasant oxidation of the metal that would interfere with the printing.
